Can you specify a Person....Job Spec - Person Spec

Updated: Apr 17, 2023

This isn’t some form of cloning or dating app, although it does have some synergy with a dating app in that you detail a set of preferences - requirements.

All job roles will have a Person Specification, detailing key- essential requirements and desirable ones. If you are drafting one, you need to think about what you want in a Person.

Primarily you would want the relevant qualifications, in addition the level of experience will need to be set out comparatively to the role. As an example for a runner, you would seek a reasonable qualification say “A level” Film Studies- Photography- Creative Media, or maybe an undergrad. This provides the underpinning interest level, experience is probably very low on your list and definitely secondary to qualifications.

However, for a Camera Operator, you would want a combination of higher qualification, such as a BA Hons but equally you would want experience of camera work, potentially accompanied with a show reel.

Where you are applying for a role, the person spec informs you of the expectations such as duties, experience and qualifications. It’s here where you have to review your CV, it’s not about fabricating or misleading anyone. It’s about targeting your CV/skills in words, style and content that can align with this specification where they match. Also it allows you to pre-screen yourself to see if you do potentially fit before actually applying.

The employer, in creating this, helps them filter applicants, as largely they will use the person specification as a means to initially score or rate the application. Tailoring your CV helps you align more with the role, and hopefully get to the “short list”.
